what can patients expect from therapy?
Never been in therapy before? Let's Capitalize on Strengths!
Welcome! My goal is to help you have a more successful and active life by capitalizing on all of the incredible strengths that I know are already inside you. You are a strong person for wanting to move forward with your life and goals in this way, and I hope therapy has a major benefit for you, allowing you to learn new skills and new ways of thinking about life's challenges, no matter how overwhelming they may be.
Lots of people are a little nervous at first about “therapy.” But let me assure you that there’s nothing to be afraid of. The first time we meet will only be an “intake.” It’s a chance for me to find out your history, why you’ve come to my office, what you hope to achieve, and frankly, just get to know you better. And the same goes for you. It’s your chance to get to know me, to see if the chemistry is right and if this is something that you feel will work for you.
We’ll meet for 45 minutes or so the first time and toward the end of that time, you and I together will decide the next step. If you do choose to work with me, I’ll let you know about the strategies and methods that you might choose, all your treatment options, and what they might entail. We’ll figure out what schedule works best for you.
Don’t worry if sometimes you don’t feel you have anything to say. Don’t worry if you do, but you’re afraid to say it. We’ll get there together, and I will help you through that process. You are in the driver’s seat. Remember: Our goal is not to make you perfect. It’s to help you improve your life, as you wish it to be, and to move toward being the best version of yourself.
Think of your therapist like you would a pair of scissors or a hammer… I am a tool that you are using to build the life you want. I have a basket of skills, ideas, processes, and knowledge to help you get there. Talking is often one tool, but while we're talking, I'm also formulating ways to help you break through your thinking patterns and see new possibilities. I may also teach you coping strategies, from breathing techniques to self-hypnosis. I’m ready and willing to share these skills for anyone who wants to try.
I use methods that shown to be the most helpful to clients, incorporating new treatment methods when they become available, and if they are right for your situation.
You’ve probably already read the bio, but just to remind you, my favorite things to treat are depression, anxiety, trauma, and stressful life circumstances. I’m very good with patients whose bodies are feeling the ravages of a life that’s been hard… perhaps you also have pain, stomach problems, or unusual medical symptoms. We’ll look at that too, because you are a whole person, mind, body, and spirit, not just a “disease” or a “problem.” Let’s capitalize on your strengths and help you be the person you want to be.
Sincerely,
Dr. Wright
